Tips & Warnings Before You Edit XML File

  • Make sure you save the duplicate file to your computer’s desktop. This will give you quick access to move the duplicate file without any dilemmas.
  • Identifying the file’s name, or at least a keyword within the name, will always be needed when locating it. These files are usually not easy to find but stored as internal purposes for your programs and files.
  • Make sure you don’t try to save the opened XML file in the current document. You will be forced to close this XML document, because they are not customarily edited.
  • You must follow the prompts and information provided. These files are not very easy to locate. In most instances, they can be recognized by their .xml, and sometimes, .dll format extension. Also, some XML documents will not even be classified as either extension. The file extension will only be view in the document type or format.
  • If you do not find the “Notepad” program available under the “Open With” option, then choose the “Browse” command within the “Open With” drop box menu to locate and open the program.

How To Edit XML File

Step 1

Locate the XML file’s location on your hard disk storage. Click on the “Start” icon on your PC’s desktop taskbar menu, and select the “Run” option command found in the Start menu drop box menu. When the “Run” command dialogue window Opened, type your XML file’s name into the available blank space. Select the “OK” option for your computer to search for the file location. Your “Run” application’s results will open in another Windows Explorer dialogue window.

Navigate the search results while your Run application has generated. Once you have located your XML file, then right-click on the file location link provided and select “Open With” in the drop box. When the “Open With” action sub-list appears, choose “Notepad” to open the file’s contents, but make sure you don’t close the Windows Explorer dialogue. When the file opens, its content will be displayed in a coded language form.

Step 3

Edit the document. Please review the document and edit its contents as you want. Do not move any asterisks, punctuations, or arrows. These markings add to the document’s structure, just as a period or other punctuation mark ends a sentence. When you have finished editing the document, then click on the “File” tab in the navigation menu at the top of the program.

Step 4

Tap on the “Save As” option, and choose “Desktop,” listed in the left panel of the “Save As” dialogue box that will open. Save the document to your desktop storage. (Please note that you must save your new edited document in a different location to avoid overriding the existing document. Overrides are not allow with XML files.) Click the “OK” option to confirm the new file location and then close the dialogue window. You will now see the new edited file’s icon on your computer’s desktop storage.

Step 5

Drag the modified file on your computer’s desktop to the original XML file that should still be listed in your “Run” application’s search results. Once you have confirmed the newly altered XML file to the original, your computer will automatically enable the override, which will remove the original file. You will see a pop-up notification screen that will notify you of the status of the override operation.
